DESCRIPTION

Kilmartin Museum is located in the heart of prehistoric Kilmartin Glen in Argyll.
It is one of Scotland's richest prehistoric landscapes.  Over 800 historic monuments, cairns, standing stones, stone circles and rock art dating back over 5000 years have been recorded within this area.

"How many museums can you go to where you can examine a Bronze Age pot and look out of the window and see the burial mound where it came from?" (Sir Tony Robinson - Time Team).

Kilmartin Museum collects and cares for archaeological objects that are found, by chance or excavation in Mid Argyll. Visitors and locals alike are able to enjoy these artefacts in the Museum gallery and are then able to step outside into the landscape to enjoy the sites and monuments where they were found. The Museum continues to carry out archaeological surveys and its excavations are continually uncovering new and exciting artefacts.

There are lots of hands on interactive activities for children including rubbings, flour grinding and objects to handle.

Also on site is our welcoming, family friendly cafe with stunning views of the glen.  Our gift and book shop are stocked with jewellery, art, cards and craftwork from local artisans. Our book shop provides a range of fiction and reference books, of which many have a local or Scottish theme.

Throughout the year there are various activities and events, please check our website for details.

From 19th April until the end of September 2017, there is a guided walk every Wednesday from 1.30pm to 4pm. Discover what makes the ancient landscape of Kilmartin Glen so unique by joining knowledgeable volunteer guides on a guided glen walk. Walks are free, just sign up at the museum shop on the day.

Walks take approximately two and a half hours and finish back at the Museum. Maximum 20 people. No dogs except guide dogs. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Boots and waterproofs recommended.

Please see our website for current admission charges.

Closed from Christmas until 1st March
